Independent Italian administrative authority bans use of Google Analytics

Transfer of data to the USA without adequate level of data protection

In coordination with other EU data protection authorities, the Italian “Garante per la Protezione dei Dati Personali” also concludes that the use of Google Analytics is not in line with European data protection.

The authority would like to draw the attention of website operators to the fact that the transfer of personal data to the USA without an adequate level of protection is illegal. In particular, the IP address is considered to be personal data and it is pointed out that even the shortening of the IP address does not represent sufficient anonymization in view of the possibilities of Google to enrich such information.

This means that the Italian authorities are also following the positions already taken by other EU countries.
